Sight Word Scarecrow

As part of our Fall unit, Mrs. Armour came up with a great lesson to help the students practice their sight words.  The students had to read a sight word then they got to ball up a piece of paper for stuffing into a scarecrow!
Here's the outfit waiting for the lesson to begin:

The class decided to name the scarecrow "Mr. Sightword" and he will sit in our class as a fall decoration.  :)

Funky Food - Columbus Cookies

For our two days back at school after Fall Break, we studied Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the "new world."  On Friday, we made Columbus Cookies for our funky food.

Reagan brought in the items for our Columbus Cookies.
We started with graham crackers and blue icing (for water),
then we put green coconut on one end for the land.
Nutter Butter Bites with toothpicks and Fruit by the Foot
made our three ships, the Nina, Pinta, & Santa Maria.

McKinzie did a great job on her funky food.

Goodbye, Bentley

Today was Bentley's last day.  Unfortunately, his family has moved so he has to move to a new school.  Bentley's dad brought in cupcakes for the class so we could have a going-away party.

Bentley is excited about going to his new school.

At the end of the day, there were lots of hugs for Bentley.

We sure will miss you, buddy.

Bye, Bentley.  We hope you have fun at your new school!

Science Experiment - Invisible Fire Extinguisher

This Friday, our science experiment was the Invisible Fire Extinguisher.  This one was too cool.  First, we started with 2 empty containers and a candle on a wire.  We looked to see that there was nothing inside the 2 containers and Mrs. West showed us that a candle stayed lit when she put it down inside both the containers.
Then, Mrs. West poured vinegar and a little bit of baking soda into one container.  This created a chemical reaction and we got to watch it make bubbles!
When Mrs. West tried to put the lit candle down in this container, the flame went out!
We learned that the chemical reaction from the vinegar and baking soda created a gas called carbon dioxide.  Carbon dioxide is heavier than the oxygen we breathe.  Fire also needs oxygen, so that's why the fire went out when we put the candle in the carbon dioxide-filled container.
Mrs. West showed us that you can even pour the carbon dioxide from one container to the other, even without the vinegar and baking soda.
The flame went out again!
Science experiments are so cool!

Funky Food - Mucky Milkshakes

This Friday's funky food was... Mucky Milkshakes!  Mrs. West accidentally sent home the wrong week's list of ingredients, so she, Mrs. Riddle, and Mrs. Armour supplied the items for this food.  That's okay; we already have our stuff for next week's funky food!  :)

First, we put one scoop of vanilla ice cream into a quart-size zip-lock bag.  Next, we poured in a little milk.  Then, we got to squish it all together to make our milkshakes.  All we needed after that was a straw!

Bryson smiles because this is a good funky food!
Kinsey N. already has her mouth full.
 Jade slurps her milkshake.
Jamieson & Isaac are too busy to smile.

Mmm-mmm-mmm... Mucky Milkshakes!!!  You should definitely try this at home!

Fire Safety Program

Since we've been studying fire safety this week, the Banks County fire department came out to the school to talk to us.  First, we went to the gym for an assembly where the firefighters showed us how they dress up in all their gear before they enter a burning building.  They wanted to make sure we knew not to be afraid of them, even though they look kind of scary with those big masks on their faces!  (Unfortunately, Mrs. West forgot to take the camera to the assembly.)  Then we went outside and we got to see an ambulance and a fire engine.
The firefighters talked to us about the different equipment they use to put out fires.

Here is the ambulance.
They even showed us the "jaws of life!"
Our class was lucky enough to be sitting on the very first row, so we got to see everything up close.
What a fun, informative program!
